Hazal Özdemir

Primary Department: History

Began Graduate Studies: 2018

Area(s) of Research Interest: Hazal specializes in the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th and early 20th century, with an emphasis on Armenian labor migration. Her interest in photography led her to work on official migration photographs of Armenians who were immigrating to the US from the Ottoman Empire. She wants to explore the experience of women and children during migration, the issue of class and the cultural implications of the economic rivalry emerging from migration. Hazal is also interested in how Armenians perceived the issues of abandoning homeland, renouncing their Ottoman subjecthood, becoming landless and adjusting to their new lives in the US.
